Yavuz Akalın

Ney

Yavuz Akalın was born in 1965 in Kütahya, where he completed his primary, secondary, and high school education.

He began studying music at the age of nine, encouraged by his father, architect Erhan Akalın, who played the kanun and kemençe as an amateur. His first ney lessons were with Şemseddin Güvey in Kütahya. From 1977 until the master’s passing, he studied through the traditional meşk method with Neyzen Aka Gündüz Kutbay.

In 1983, he began his university education at the Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory, studying with Neyzen Niyazi Sayın. He also benefited from the mentorship of Yavuz Özüstün, Hâfız Kâni Karaca, İhsan Özgen, Bekir Sıdkı Sezgin, Alaeddin Yavaşça, and Necdet Yaşar.

In 1985, he passed the Ministry of Culture’s artist exam and joined the İzmir State Classical Turkish Music Choir, led by Teoman Önaldı. He continued his conservatory studies at Ege University State Conservatory of Turkish Music, where he also took kanun lessons from Mehmet Kutlugün, graduating in 1989.

From 1992 to 1994, he taught at Dokuz Eylül University’s Musicology Department, and from 1995 to 1999, he taught ney at Ege University. He has performed with groups such as the Alaeddin Yavaşça Men’s Choir, Ruhi Ayangil Turkish Music Orchestra, and the Tanrıkorur Instrumental Ensemble led by Cinuçen Tanrıkorur, giving concerts both in Turkey and abroad.

He has contributed to fifteen published albums as a ney player, serving as artistic director on two of them. His solo album İnci (Vol. IV) was released in 2022 by Seyir Müzik. He has composed around thirty works, mostly instrumental.

Akalın continues to contribute to Turkish music both as a performer and an educator, mentoring many amateur and professional ney players.
